Urban Infrastructure and Governance

UIG conducts research and engages public and private sector stakeholders to develop solutions to promote inclusive access to high quality infrastructure and services.

In cities across India, citizens experience a wide disparity in the quality of, and access to, infrastructure and services.  While the urban elite and middle class enjoy 24 hour electricity and water supply through individual investment in generators, private wells, and storage tanks, the urban poor are left to cope with frequent power cuts and intermittent or non-existent water supply. Overall, the lack of high quality infrastructure and services hinders cities ability to become engines of inclusive, sustainable growth. In response to this, CDF’s Urban Infrastructure and Governance (UIG) group conducts research and engages public and private sector stakeholders to develop solutions to pressing challenges in the areas of land management, municipal finance, drinking water and sanitation, energy efficiency, waste processing and institutional reform. To accomplish this, UIG’s research and consulting work are built around four core initiatives: Information, IT, and Urban Governance; Inclusive Infrastructure and PlanningUnpacking Urban InformalitySustainable Urban Infrastructure.
