In India, there are a series of policies in place that dictate how land use in cities is supposed to be controlled, and how infrastructure and services are provided to city residences. However, land use management and infrastructure and service provision in practice widely diverge from the ideal set out in policies. In addition, residents of urban areas face a very wide disparity in access to infrastructure and services depending on their location within a city, their socio-economic class, and their ability to access private infrastructure and services. Projects in this initiative seek to understand and document the ways in which city residents access land, infrastructure, and services in practice, particularly the urban poor. Building on this knowledge and with a focus on the poor, projects also suggest means of improving the quality of and access to services.
